Why Not Become All Flame, by Martha Jane Petersen

Weaving together patterned and hot-colored fabric strips, Martha Jane Petersen created a backdrop that evokes the raw and elemental energy of Spirit. Over this shimmering material the artist stitched fabrics of cool, dark indigo blues and white. The striking contrast speaks of fire and water/earth, of sky/wind and flame, spirit and matter. Over 40 individual fabric blocks hang in layers and tongues of flame spark against the cool ground. Petersen's hanging quilt encourages us to respond to the great gift of Presence by being all aflame.
