The RG Outrider is the latest member of BAE Systems' armoured vehicle stable. Based on the technology implemented in the design of the RG32M. it weighs 9.5 tonnes, although its V-shaped monocoque hull is 20 cm wider and features steel welded armour together with added side blast protection. According to the manufacturer, the Outrider's two-tonne capacity bay is tailored for command, liaison and scouting duties. Complying with the current trend, it uses many commercial-off-theshelf components to ease maintenance issues through widespread commercial distribution networks. The engine, for example, is the 20Q-IcW turbo charged Steyr Motors Ml 6SCI diesel which, mated to an Allison fivespeed automatic gearbox and a two-ratio Atlas transfer case, affords it a road speed of 120 km/h. With a width of 2.20 metres and a length of six metres, it still is a large vehicle, but nevertheless one capable of riding 30% gradient side-slopes.
