Died: Dave Stevens, 60, patriarch of the Stevens Family Top Fuel team, April 17. Stevens had a lifelong love of drag racing and as a youngster helped his father, Paul, race Top Fuel. During his career in the military, Stevens raced while stationed in Guam, and after being transferred to Japan, he helped establish the Japanese Hot Rod Association. Died: Dick Huerta, 73, of complications from bypass surgery, April 11. Huerta was a pioneer of drag racing in the 1950s and 1960s who drove many cars, including the Butters-Gerards Wild Thing to a national record. He also partnered with Roy Swanson in the 1960s on a Dragmaster-chassised car that they purchased from Mickey Thompson. He later graduated to alcohol and Top Fuel racing. Died: Longtime Sportsman racer Chuck Thomas, May 12. Thomas and his wife, Sharon, were longtime car-club supporters. Died: longtime nitro crewmember Manuel Williams, 71. Williams worked with many successful racers, including Gene Snow, Don Prudhomme, Jimmy Nix, and Connie Kalitta, and was the father-in-law of former Top Fuel racer Michael Brotherton.
