Quaver's Marvelous World of Music Ultimate Box Set, DVDs with Teacher Guides. Quaver's Marvelous World of Music, 2011. www.QuaverMusic.com; $995.
Move over Guitar Hero, Wii and GameBoy! Bring your peeps and BFFs and take a good look at Quaver's Marvelous World ofMusid This "seriously fun" technologically advanced, interactive music education series is a breakthrough course on how today's student might really learn about music and even like it!
Quaver's Marvelous World of Music is a comprehensive classroom DVD Series, which is accompanied by thorough and well-written Teacher Guides. In each DVD lesson (lasting about 15 minutes), the teacher has the opportunity to add activities, highlight concepts and expand the lesson in any number of ways. In addition, there is super cool website that offers teachers and students the opportunity to compose music, play games, explore musical genres (your avatar gets on the metro!) and much more. This is truly a "you have to see it to believe it."
Now, music educators and friends - this is the time when you are going to have to leave your "perfect music educator" hat at the door and jump into today's world. Kids will love it and ultimately they will love music - that's our common goal! Not every single performance and every musical reference is "perfectly" accurate - but it is all fun and no harm done.
Currently, Quavers Marvelous World of Music includes 30 episodes on 15 discs. In addition, there is an Online Interactive Classroom (including an interactive white board technology) and the Kids' Website.
"Quaver" is your musical host and characters are developed throughout the episodes. There are talking composer statues, other kids and lots of clever characters to assist Quaver in his musical adventures. There is diversity in musical selections and characters and the episodes will appeal to a broad-based audience (including fun-loving adults!).
Independent music teachers of all instruments could easily work with these materials alongside public school music teachers or within MTNA local associations. While some may consider the cost to be prohibitive, Quaver Music will work out personalized payment plans. It's all worth it if it gets more kids excited about music! - Reviewed by Rachel Kramer, NCTM, Cincinnati, Ohio
