GATEWAY MOTORSPORTS PARK, St. Louis (April 21-22) - Tony Virgilio led the list of winners from the NHRA Spring Sportsman Challenge XX National Open, winning the JEGS Super Quick Series title at the rain-delayed event. Other Sunday winners were Don O'Malley (Super Stock/Stock combo), Greg Gerakaris (Super Comp), Larry Bernshausen (Super Gas), Jon Tignor (Super Street), Darryl Sutton (Super Pro), James Pearson (Pro/Sportsman ET) Dylan Sutton (Jr. Dragster Overall/10-12), Talon Bandy (Jr. Dragster 8-9), and Morgan Keyser (Jr. Dragster 13-17).

Virgilio scored his second Super Quick Series win by edging Robbie Freels in the final. A starting-line advantage helped Virgilio get around Freels for the win with a 4.507 (4.50 dial). His previous win came last season at his home track, Crossroads Dragway, but only after being inserted in the field as the first alternate. This time, Virgilio qualified comfortably in the No. 11 position with a 4.513 with new Steve Schmidt Competition Engines power.

Ed Dudley led all qualifiers with a 4.501 at 153.75 mph to collect the $200 JEGS gift certificate.

The event also featured eighth-mile bracket racing on Saturday, during which Rod Schaeffer (Super Pro), John Ratulowski (Pro/Sportsman), and Shelby Hamilton (Jr. Dragster) were victorious. - Jay Hullinger
