From a faded map of Minneapolis 's "Gay Ghetto" to a complex "hanky code" used at the Gay 90's to signal sexual interests, Stewart Van Cleve's Land of ?0.000 Loves (U of M Press, $25) offers a lively look inside Minnesota's once-bustling closet. Some stories are sweet, like those of suburban housewives partying with bare-chested men in Tyrol Hills, a Golden Valley enclave that became known as the Swish Alps. Others, like a recounting of a bathhouse raid, are darkly hilarious: the police confiscate an enormous leather phallus and, unable to fit it into their van, are compelled to drive away with it strapped to the roof.
